The man who had rushed into the pub, a Richard Bowers, described how he had been taking an afternoon walk when he had spotted something as he peered over the ridge of a cliff. He seemed shaken, which was only natural given how he had just seen a dead body. He clasped his hands together and kept running his fingers through his hair. He said that he had heard a new constable had arrived in town and thought it was best that he called for assistance first. Apparently he had gone into the police station, and when he had seen it empty he had tried every other building along the seafront, eventually coming into the pub.

“Well, I’m sure we’ll get this all sorted out,” Simon said, seeming more aggrieved than anything else.

They walked up to the cliff top. There was an ambler’s path that led up there. It was set away from the town, and from this vantage point there was a beautiful view of the shore that curved around, as well as the beautiful sea. A thicket of trees shaded them, and Pippa could see why Richard had come here. It seemed as though it was a good place to be alone with your thoughts. Pippa thought she might try coming up here once in a while.

“It’s down there,” Richard said, pointing with a pale finger to the edge of the cliff. He made sure to keep his distance. Pippa and Simon inched toward the edge. Pippa glanced down at her feet, making sure to keep her heels firmly planted on the ground beneath her. She peered over the edge and could feel the pull of the void, this sensation that almost tricked her into feeling as if she would fall. She shook it from her mind and glanced down. It took her a couple of moments to see the body amid the rocks, but once she saw it she could not look away. Even from this height she could see that the limbs were twisted in unnatural angles, and it made her feel sick to think that someone had plummeted from this height and crashed into the rocks. She imagined the crack and the crash of the impact, and shuddered, stepping back.

“I didn’t think to go down there myself. I thought a professional was better suited,” Richard said.

Simon nodded and sighed. “Why don’t you head back to the station. I’ll come by and record your statement later. I suppose I should go and have a look, would you like to come with me Pippa? You do have something of a talent for this,” he said. Pippa nodded, feeling as though she shouldn’t refuse a request from a member of the law. There was a small path that led down the cliff. It was narrow and steep, with few ways to steady herself, so the going was slow and tough. There were a few moments where the pebbles she dislodged tumbled down and skittered against the surface of the cliff.
